Choosing Equipment For Your Home Gym

When you start kitting out your first home gym, you may find the huge choice of home gym equipment quite daunting. What you need to keep in mind are three key factors:

  • Space
  • Purpose
  • Price

Space

If you're lucky enough to have a spare room you can convert into your gym, you'll probably be able to accommodate a good mix of gym equipment. A great combination would be a multi-gym, rower, treadmill and cross trainer for an excellent overall workout. You'll need to look at the measurements of the items you're buying for your home gym, however, and make absolutely sure they're going to fit, allowing for clearance.

Many of us won't have a spare room to convert into a home gym, and will have to work with a spare corner here or there. There is a huge range of home gym equipment suitable for smaller spaces, and many treadmills, rowers, bikes - even weight benches and multi-gyms, fold away. Free weights are great as there's a huge variety of exercises they can be used in, and afterwards they can be discreetly stored away.

Purpose

Are you looking to improve your overall fitness? Then cardiovascular gym equipment will be for you - items such as steppers, rowers, treadmills and cross trainers. If you're looking to increase your muscle mass, obviously you will want to stock up on weights for your home gym. Most of us, however, are looking for something in between: to improve our overall fitness whilst toning up at the same time. A combination of cardiovascular and weight gym equipment will bring maximum results.

Price

Obviously this will be a major consideration, and will affect greatly what home gym equipment you're going to buy. If your budget is restricted, don't be put off. You can pick up a quality skipping rope for less than £2, and skipping is one of the best exercises for weight loss. You can pick up a resistance band for as little as £5 which is great for working on the upper and lower body. There's a massive variety of home gym equipment on the market and the opportunities are endless. The big advantage is that by investing in your own home gym equipment, you can avoid those astronomic gym membership fees!

Losing Weight The Healthy Way

We've all been there. Too many mince pies at Christmas, icecreams on holiday, or nibbles during the day. It sneaks up on us while we're not looking, and suddenly catches us out. Before we know it, there's a special occasion coming up and we're filled with dread. Just how are we going to squeeze into the dress/bikini/dinnersuit? Will we have to resort to the grapefruit diet? Even worse... cabbage soup?

No. Absolutely not! But we do have to take ownership of the problem. Our first step will be to address our calorie and fat intakes. Now, the amount of calories you burn each day will depend greatly on your lifestyle. A cashier at a bank who does not exercise will need a lower calorie intake than, say, a builder who plays squash three times a week. Your intake will also depend on your sex. As a rough guide, the maximum calorie intake for a man is 2,500, and for a woman, 2,000. Women should eat no more than 70g of fat per day, with only 20g of that being saturated fat. Men should eat no more than 90g of fat, with only 30g of saturated fat. These (very rough) guidelines set out the recommended intake if you wish to maintain your current weight. If you are looking to lose weight, you will need to reduce your consumption, eat a balanced diet, and follow an exercise regime. The absolute minimum calorie intake for a woman is 1,200. For a man, it is 1,800. Fat = 40g minimum for ladies, 50g for men. Cut down on saturated fats as much as you can. This is the absolute minimum you can consume without risking damage to your body, possibly permanently. The majority of people will struggle with a sudden drop in calories like this and soon find their energy plumeting; their concentration on the wane, and in a short time, feeling pretty darned miserable! We recommend a steady start, say, for a woman, dropping to 1,500 calories and 40g fat per day, combined with an exercise regime which gradually increases. We don't recommend you suddenly cut out all of the foods that you love. If chocolate's your weakness, well, why not let yourself have a bar as a treat - just make yourself walk to the shop and buy it, rather than slinging a multipack in your trolley at the supermarket!

As far as exercise is concerned, the fitter you become, the longer you'll be able to exercise for. You'll start to feel and see great results and this is the boost you need to keep the momentum going. There's no point plotting your first session at the gym as an hour flat out on the treadmill. If you do finish, yes, you'll feel you've accomplished something, but when you're still aching in three days time, are you really going want to get back on? Unlikely. Start off with realistic targets and build up gradually. Keeping a note of your times, distances, weights and speeds is great for a morale boost. Take a look back through it in a month's time - you'll be amazed at the progress you've made!  Scroll down to view our showcase of items available on eBay today and take advantage of some fantastic savings.
